University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry Policies
The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (URSMD) has updated and revised important medical student policies. Students, residents and faculty should be aware of these policies to optimize the learning environment. Policies and Procedures are located, in full, in the URSMD student handbook.

Congratulations
Phase 4 students Allison (Al) Ogawa and Valentina Sedlacek, have been awarded 2023 STFM Foundation Student Scholarships from the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) to participate in the 2023 STFM Conference on Medical Student Education.
In addition to recognizing a strong commitment to academic family medicine through scholastic, volunteer, and leadership pursuits, this award acknowledges the recipient’s strong potential for a career in academic medicine.
- Allison (Al) Ogawa plans to present a poster at the conference, titled: Recognizing the Resilience of LGBTQ+ Older Adults through Narrative: Culturally Connected Clinical Interviewing
- Valentina Sedlacek plans to present a poster at the conference, titled: Extending the Reach of Family Physicians: Developing a Community-Based Health Promotion Program
STFM is a national community of academic leaders committed to developing a family medicine workforce prepared to serve as the foundation of America’s health care system. STFM members include physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, behavioral health specialists, researchers, nurses, health system executives, administrators, fellows, residents, students, and others involved in the education of family physicians.

Phase 4 students, Kavya Bana, Mariah Erlick, and Allison (Al) Ogawa have been selected as Honorable Mentions for the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) Paul Ambrose Outstanding Student Activist Award.
- Kavya Bana: Honorable Mention in the category of Health Equity
- Mariah Erlick: Honorable Mention in the category of Health Equity
- Allison (Al) Ogawa: Honorable Mention for the category of Diversity and Antiracism
Dedicated to the late Paul Ambrose, the award recognizes students who have taken the lead in their schools or communities to promote health, peace, and social justice.
As Honorable Mentions, they been invited to attend and be recognized at the AMSA Award Ceremony on June 17, 2023 which will be held during the annual conference, AMSACon, in Phoenix, AZ. In addition, they will be featured in the AMSA publication The New Physician.

Congratulations to Phase 3 student Neha Narayan, recent graduate Dr. Arielle Schecter, and Deaf Health Pathway Director, Dr. Jason Rotoli who had a paper published in Medical Science Educator. The piece entitled: "Deaf Health Pathway — Immersing Medical Students in the Cultural and Language Aspects of Deaf Health" was published in January.

The following videos, prepared by the Committee on Media Creation for Giving Effective Feedback at URSMD, provide a resource for faculty, residents, preceptors, small group leaders, and tutors in giving feedback to students.
There are many opportunities to teach medical students at URSMD. Different formats and options include:
- Clinical teaching in the clerkships
- Small Group teaching
- Serving as a Problem Based Learning tutor
- Serving as preceptor for Phase 1 and Phase 2 medical students in primary care offices.
