Maternal Child Health Fellowship

An Integrated Rural/Urban Maternal and Child Health Fellowship to Improve Maternal Underserved

Outcomes

The Maternal Child Health (MCH) fellowship program is designed to train Family Medicine doctors in high risk/surgical obstetrics and management of common newborn conditions, equipping them with the skills necessary to improve maternal and child health outcomes for underserved populations

In 2021, the Department of Family Medicine received 5-year grant funding to expand and enhance the fellowship. 
The one-year fellowship is particularly designed for those interested in practicing in an underserved setting.

Program Details

The fellowship offers 2 tracks:

Surgically focused track: Two (2) fellows each year, one to start in July 2025 (start date: July 21) and the second to start in November 2025 (start date: November 3)

Advanced obstetrics track: Two (2) fellows each year, one to start in July 2025 (start date: July 21) and the second to start in November 2025 (start date: November 3

The Fellowship partners with the URMC OB/GYN Department and the interprofessional team at Jones Memorial Hospital to integrate clinical experiences in various settings

  • High-volume obstetrics in an urban hospital (Highland Hospital)
  • Urban underserved family medicine practice (Highland Family Medicine)
  • Rural hospital/primary care office (Jones Memorial Hospital and associated outpatient clinics in Wellsville, NY)
     

Fellows will complete a year-long program which includes:

  • High-volume inpatient obstetrics experience at Highland Hospital
  • 1-2 months immersion experience in rural maternal health in Wellsville, NY (housing provided)
  • Perinatal and outpatient primary care at Highland Family Medicine working collaboratively with care management services
  • Didactics which cover competencies in maternity care, newborn care, primary care, rural training, telemedicine, and practice management
  • Training and experience in opioid use disorder and telemedicine
  • Electives including NICU, Ultrasound, and other experiences based on individual need
  • Opportunities to address maternal morbidity and mortality through QI projects

  • CME funding: $2,100/year, and $2000/year for rural-focused conference attendance
