URMC Research: Treatments & Cures

Research at UR Medicine has resulted in landmark vaccines, innovative heart devices, and other treatments and preventions that patients around the world now take for granted as a standard practice in medicine.

Our scientists have developed a vaccine to virtually eradicate a leading cause of meningitis in preschoolers; contributed crucial technology toward the world’s first cancer vaccine; and pioneered a geriatric fracture program to better handle the unique medical needs of elderly patients.

Today, our scientists are working on vaccines to prevent AIDS, new strains of “super flu,” and MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus) infections. They also are on the cusp of finding a cure for muscular dystrophy, looking at ways to kill or turn off” cancer cells without damaging normal cells, developing the first drug therapy to prevent osteoarthritis, and using stem cell research and therapy to treat multiple sclerosis and repair damage from spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury.

Your generosity will give scientists the opportunity to revolutionize medical advances and turn scientific insights into medical breakthroughs.
