Thoughts from the Chair

I’m grateful for the opportunity to have a six-month sabbatical after serving for five years as Chair and will use this brief column as an update. I spent the summer working on professional creative writing and have submitted several poems and short narratives for publication.
 

Growing Family Medicine Clerkship Program Getting High Marks

Family Medicine medical education programs, which include both the required Family Medicine Clerkship as well as inpatient and outpatient rotations, help students gain exposure to the breadth of the discipline. The growing number of students has led to the clerkship program expanding its structure to keep pace.

HFM and UR Medicine Physicians Contribute to New Prenatal Breastfeeding Protocol

In August 2024, the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (ABM) issued a revision to its “Breastfeeding Promotion in the Prenatal Period” clinical protocol, which was originally published in 2015. Annie Jack, M.D., led the team that included Elizabeth Brown, M.D., MPH, and Scott Hartman, M.D., to update this protocol.

Maternal Child Health Fellowship Expanding to Meet Needs in the Southern Tier, DFM Receives Lactation Grant

The University of Rochester’s Maternal Child Health Fellowship, which trains Family Medicine doctors in high-risk and surgical obstetrics, received five-year HRSA funding in 2021 to expand and enhance the fellowship. Part of that ongoing effort involves expanding care to patients in the Southern Tier.

Alumni Spotlight: Anna Jack, MD, Assistant Professor of Clinical Family Medicine and Pediatrics

Following undergraduate studies at McGill University and medical school at Boston University, Anna “Annie” Jack, M.D., had three items on her wish list for a residency program: 1) that it was a high-quality program; 2) that it included a community hospital; and 3) that it was part of an academic medical center.

Many colleagues told her to think about Rochester. She barely knew where Rochester was on a map. Her mother joked (and still does) that Rochester is in the Midwest, far away from where the family primarily lives on the East Coast
