Highland Installs Latest Technology CT Scanner

Highland Hospital recently installed a new Philips CT 5100 Incisive, the latest addition to the Philips CT portfolio. The power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is deeply embedded into the CT system and its applications, enabling more precision in dose, speed, and image quality. “Highland is committed to the highest quality in diagnostic imaging,” said Raymond Tan, M.D., Chief, Department of Medical Imaging, “and this CT will produce images faster and clearer with less radiation exposure.”

According to Dr. Tan, Highland has always invested in the scanners that expose patients to the least amount of radiation and this one goes even farther, assuring an 80% radiation exposure reduction as well an 85% reduced noise level, a 60% increase in contrast detectability and reductions in reading time.

“Another benefit of this scanner is that its AI has deep learning capability which processes out the image noise that previously hampered low radiation scans,” said Dr. Tan.  “We can now provide a high degree of patient specific, customized imaging as each scan begins with a profile of the patient’s height, body mass, etc., to produce an even more precise scan.” Virtual colonoscopies, a Highland specialty, and lung cancer screenings will produce less radiation exposure with this scanner as well.

“In addition, the Phillips CT 5100 Incisive also does fantastic imaging of joint implants and spinal hardware, eliminating the artifacts that these sometimes cause in imaging,” said Dr. Tan.

“We are very excited about this new sophisticated piece of equipment which will benefit physicians and patients throughout the hospital,” said Dr. Tan. Highland has purchased two of these scanners. The second one is scheduled to be installed next spring.
