MyChart Disponible en Español! (MyChart is Available in Spanish)

MyChart’s online portal is now available in Spanish! UR Medicine patients and their family members for whom Spanish is the primary or preferred language now have better access to their health and wellness plans. The translation to Spanish can assist a notable volume of our patient population with managing appointments and receiving notifications regarding their health care.

According to the data at Census Reporter, five percent of households in our market region prefer to speak Spanish as the primary language at home. As of March 2023, over 17,000 of our patients have indicated Spanish as their preferred language, yet only 4,000 have active MyChart accounts. We expect to see a rise in both of these counts in the coming months, as accessibility improves.

Choose a Language

Both English and Spanish MyChart language preferences may be enabled via “Ver en Español/View in English” link above login OR under the world icon located in the navigation bar upon login – both in the online portal only. The MyChart mobile app will automatically translate based on the device’s default language settings. Custom fields such as prescription instructions, proper nouns, and dates will remain in English for the time being as further development takes place.

Patient Messages

MyChart patient messages will remain in the language they are written in. Staff is encouraged to engage with all patients, following their office's policies. A few points to keep in mind:

  • Staff who already communicate with patients in Spanish may continue to do so per their office policies.
  • Staff should follow their individual office's policy regarding the use of translation tools for non-medical questions such as appointment times and requests. Medical advice and directions should NOT be left to online translation tools.
  • Staff unable to respond to patient messages in Spanish may use the new SmartPhrase (.MyCSpanish) to acknowledge receipt of the message and offer options to communicate for follow-up about the patient’s needs.

Health care teams may notice an increase in inbox messages written in Spanish as more patients register for MyChart.

Having information and online access to health care providers in patients’ preferred language gives patients a better opportunity to live their lives in the healthiest way. UR Medicine is committed to reducing and eliminating language access barriers and providing meaningful access to services, programs, and resources.
