The Perfect Score: Flawless NYSDOH Inspection for Highland Laboratory
Highland Hospital Laboratory recently received an error-free evaluation from the New York Department of Health in an unannounced inspection. Highland Chief of Pathology Julietta Fiscella, M.D., CPE, FCAP, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, "It’s unheard of to have an inspection without errors. It’s that significant." Director of Laboratory and Support Services Tsega Belete, MT (ASCP) added, "It's really remarkable because of scope of the evaluation. So, we're extremely excited and proud of our staff and the work that we've been doing in the past couple of years."
During the inspection process, the state evaluated the gamut, from pre-analytical to post-analytical processes, by creating tracer audits that involve taking specimens from beginning to end. This time, approximately 22 tracer audits were conducted in laboratory areas, including Microbiology, Histopathology, Cytopathology, Chemistry Blood Bank, Hematology, and Coagulation. Tracer audits meticulously examine the competency and proficiency of every staff member involved in handling the specimens.
The NYSDOH assessment also reviewed quality management and assurance practices, which ensure that robust measures are in place to monitor and maintain the highest standards of quality. Additionally, safety protocols and human resources practices, such as staff onboarding and technical training for new employees, are thoroughly inspected. ‘The fact that our laboratory excelled in all these areas is a testament to the meticulousness and dedication of our staff,” said Dr. Fiscella.
