The Instructional Design for Excellence in Academics (IDEA) team is part of the Educational IT division of the Institute for Innovative Education. IDEA is staffed by Instructional Designers who can help you bring your ideas for innovative ways to educate to fruition and help you brainstorm ideas when you are looking for something new.

The IDEA team can assist with the creation of digital content to support or supplement your teaching, as well as help you with course design (or re-design), especially with regard to using online tools to enhance your teaching. We also offer Blackboard consultation and training.

Meet the IDEA Team
Lisa Brown
Lisa Brown, EdD, MS is the Director of Online Learning in the Institute for Innovative Education. Her focus is helping faculty rethink education through use of technology. Additionally, Lisa manages the Teaching and Learning Services team within University IT which includes the Blackboard Learning Management System, Panopto Video Capture system, Zoom for academic use, AEFIS assessment system, and Voicethread. Lisa has a master’s degree in Instructional Technology from Rochester Institute of Technology, and both an advanced certificate in Online Teaching and a doctorate in education from the Warner School of Education on the University of Rochester’s campus. Shane Mitchell
Shane Mitchell, MS, is an Instructional Design Specialist in the Institute for Innovative Education. He has a background in media creation and educational technology, as well journalism and technology support. Shane got his B.S. in English at University of North Alabama, his Masters in Distance Learning and Management from University of West Florida, and is currently finishing his PhD in Instructional Design from University of South Alabama. He enjoys creating video games, repairing PCs and old technology, and woodworking. Jennie Peck
Jennie Peck, MS, is an Instructional Design Specialist in the Institute for Innovative Education. Jennie earned her master’s degree from the University of Rochester’s Warner School of Education in Teaching and Curriculum in Secondary Science and subsequently taught science at the middle and high school levels for over twenty years. Driven to discover, Jennie conducted research on several different teaching methods and won the Rochester Area Excellence in STEM teaching Award for innovation in science education in 2008. Jennie was also appointed to the role of instructional specialist where she worked directly with teachers to analyze student data, write assessments, and design curriculum and instructional support materials to improve student engagement and achievement. Jennie can support faculty and academic programs in data collection and analysis, creation of multimedia assets including online learning modules, technology integration, Blackboard, and implementation of engaging instructional practices.
