Overview
Our Adult Inpatient Psychiatry Service serves patients ages 18 and up who have symptoms of serious psychiatric illness or disorder requiring a safe and therapeutic environment during evaluation and treatment.
The Adult Inpatient Psychiatry Service at the University of Rochester Medical Center specializes in providing comprehensive, multidisciplinary, short-term assessment and treatment of patients dealing with acute psychiatric issues. We do so with a respectful, team-based approach to our patients’ well-being by integrating clinical care, teaching, and research. The goal is to stabilize patients as quickly as possible and develop a discharge plan that best meets the needs of the patient with available and appropriate community resources. We actively involve families/supports and other community care and treatment providers for input.
Patients are admitted primarily from the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Service and also referrals from our medical services units, including the Psychiatric Consultation-Liaison Service.
Our Psychiatric Consultation-Liaison Service provides evaluation and assistance with the management of psychiatric disorders occurring in medically ill or injured inpatients throughout Strong Memorial Hospital. Clinicians can refer patients for consultation by calling (585) 275-3592.
Patient & Visitor Information
The first step in care is the initial evaluation by a team of mental health professionals, which includes an overall assessment of each patient's psychiatric, psychosocial, and medical health components. Utilizing our multidisciplinary team improves our ability to make a thoughtful and informed patient-centered treatment plan.
Treatment Plan
The psychiatrist and care team will work with the patient and family/supports to tailor a treatment plan to address each patient’s psychiatric and medical needs. Treatment may include:
- Group therapy
- Individual therapy
- Medication management
- Assessment of co-occurring substance use needs
- Sensory interventions
- Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
- Medical interventions, including consultation with our Medicine in Psychiatry Service team and other medical specialists if needed
Plan for Continuing Care
Our goal is to stabilize the most severe acute symptoms to improve functioning when back in the community. The team works closely with families, mental health care providers, primary care providers, and other outpatient programs involved in the patient’s care.
