Dr. Chunkit Fung is an associate professor at the medical school, and serves as a faculty advisor for two affinity medical student organizations, SPECTRUM (LGBTQ+ medical student organization) and the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association. Here at University of Rochester Medical Center, he was a member of the LGBTQ+ faculty advisory committee, co-chair of the University of Rochester (UR) Faculty Senate, and a member of the Mentoring and Equity in Compensation and Support Working Group for the Commission on Women and Gender Equity in Academia of the UR. At the national level, Fung serves as a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Sexual and Gender Minorities Task Force and recently published a progress report on ASCO’s efforts in advancing health equity for LGBTQ+ people with cancer in ASCO Connection. He has volunteered for the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), which is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve LGBTQ+ equality, with more than 3 million members nationwide, and became an HRC Board Governor in 2021. He has served as tri-chair for the HRC Western and Central NY Annual Dinner. HRC recognized his efforts with the HRC Leadership Award for Rising Star Gala Leaders in 2020.
Laura Stamm, Ph.D.

Director of DEI – Department of Medicine (SMD)
Laura Stamm is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Health Humanities & Bioethics at the University of Rochester Medical Center where she also serves as Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the Department of Medicine. Additionally, she is a current Health Equity Scholars for Action fellow with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, carrying out a national study on the impact of gender-affirming care legislation on providers’ practices. Dr. Stamm’s research takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the impact of social and political forces on the provision of health care to marginalized communities. Her work appears in various journals and media outlets, including TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly, Synapsis: A Health Humanities Journal, The Hill, and Journal of Primary Care and Community Health. Her book, The Queer Biopic in the AIDS Era, was published in Oxford University Press in 2022.
Ahona Shirin, M.S.P.H.

Health Equity Project Manager, DEI – Department of Medicine (SMD)
Prior to her role as the Health Equity Project Manager for DEI, Ahona Shirin graduated from the University of Rochester in 2022. She attended the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health to pursue a Master of Science in Public Health degree. She has a background in global health research with a focus on social and behavioral interventions at the community level. Shirin is dedicated to fostering an inclusive social and health environment that prioritizes equity and benefits all segments of society.
Diversity, Inclusion, Culture, & Equity (DICE) Board
The Department of Medicine’s Diversity, Inclusion, Culture, & Equity (DICE) Board consists of nominated Champions from each of the Department’s divisions. These representatives will meet once a month to discuss ideas and create opportunities for enhancing diversity and equity regarding departmental needs for:
- Promoting a culture of dignity and respect
- Building a healthy workplace for all employees and patients
- Providing culturally relevant care and training
