Professor Emeritus John Gerich, MD Profiled in Diabetes Care Article

The lasting impact of John "Jack" Gerich, MD on the treatment of diabetes is described in a recent Profiles in Progress article that appeared in the October issue of the American Diabetes Association's Diabetes Care. Called "the Father of Modern Physiology of Glucose Homeostasis, Counter regulation to Hypoglycemia, and Mechanistic Treatment of Diabetes," Dr. Gerich has made significant contributions to the understanding of the disease through his research. "Much of what we know today of the physiology of glucose homeostasis, lipid metabolism, glucose counterregulation to hypoglycemia and its abnormalities in diabetes, and the relative role of liver, adipose tissue, muscle, and kidney in glucose metabolism is the result of Jack’s work over several decades."

Diabetes & Endocrinology Program Recognized as "High Performing"

As it has in previous years, the Diabetes & Endocrinology specialty program has been recognized by U.S. News & World Reports 2018-2019 rankings for America's Best Hospitals. The High Performing status means that the program scored in the top 10 percent among all hospitals analyzed but were not nationally ranked. The program's ranking was determined by numerous factors, including services and staff, volume of patients, and advanced technologies. Read about the other rankings and ratings at the URMC.
Endocrinology Researcher Featured in URMC's Inspired Science Video Series

Laura Calvi, M.D. is the first researcher featured in a new video series launched this month, Inspired Science: Conversations with UR Researchers. In this first video, Dr. Calvi talks about creativity and problem-solving in the lab and& in her favorite pastime, cooking. The goal of this series is to introduce URMC researchers to the community, outside of their comfort zones in the lab, in an personal way that also showcases what they investigate. While initially focused around Wilmot Cancer Institute scientists, the URMC Public Relations team plans to expand to feature researchers in other areas of URMC.

Annual Tour de Cure Coming to Rochester in June

The American Diabetes Association's largest fundraising event is once again coming to Rochester on June 10, 2017. The Tour de Cure is a bike ride to raise awareness about diabetes and raise money for research. See full event details.
Please join the URMED team in riding in the 2018 American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure. This is the 8th year that the URDiaBEEtes Riders will be participating in this exciting event. The URMED umbrella team consists of the URDiaBEEtes Riders, Highland SpinOuts, U of R LLE, Rochester Turners and WeRThompson!!
The Tour de Cure is not just for cyclists—there are courses to walk and run as well. Bring your family/friends and come out on Saturday, June 9, 2018 to the Xerox Centre in Webster.
