What is a Midwife?

Midwife with patientCertified Nurse Midwives (CNM) are highly skilled professionals who have received formal training in primary care and women’s health from a nationally accredited program. As part of their training, CNMs are required to take a national exam before they can enter into practice. All of the midwives at Midwifery Group are Registered Nurses who hold graduate degrees and are members of the American College of Nurse Midwives.

We are all faculty members in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at the University of Rochester. There are currently 10 CNMs in Midwifery Group. Among us, we have 145 combined years of midwifery experience! Primary care, contraception, gynecology and obstetrics are the areas of focus for most midwives.
