Pathology Grand Rounds
About This Series
This core departmental conference brings faculty, residents, fellows, graduate students and staff together for an introduction to new concepts and techniques in both clinical and experimental pathology. It is part of Pathology 504, "Current Topics in Experimental Pathology."
The grand rounds series features reports from within the Department and the University of Rochester Medical Center as well as presentations by speakers from outside the University. Topics include developments in molecular pathology, cancer diagnosis/treatment and clinical quality assurance.
Grand Rounds presentations take place Mondays at Noon via Zoom. Participants will receive 1 hour of CME credit.

Hematopoietic Stem Cell Gene Therapy for Transfusion-Dependent Beta-thalassemia: This talk will review Beta-thalassemia pathology and current treatment. Drawbacks of current treatment options will be discusses. A new therapy in clinical trial will be examined. / 'Did Alphafold2 Solve the Levinthal Paradox and Fundamentally Change Structural Biology?' Computer algorithms are being developed to predict protein structure at an order of magnitude faster and cheaper. In November of this year the first algorithm that can predict protein structure with similar accuracy to experimental methods was demonstrated at CASP14.

Irene Chen, MD and Chelsea Milito, MD - University of Rochester Medical Center
Known or new genetic defect in TLR3- and IRF7-dependent induction and amplification of type I IFNs leads to life threatening COVID-19. A subset of patient with life threatening COVID-19 also found to have auto-antibodies against type I IFN. / First there will be an overview of how mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) works. Then I will discuss its use in serving as a complementary technique to Mohs surgery for basal cell carcinoma. Finally I will talk about MSI used to help diagnose oral squamous cell carcinoma.
