Curriculum
Year 1
In their first year of the Adolescent Medicine Fellowship, fellows concentrate on gaining both outpatient and inpatient clinical skills, while beginning to develop their scholarly activity project.
Clinical
Fellows dedicate four half-days per week to outpatient clinic.
- One half-day is spent at the Golisano Children’s Hospital Adolescent and Young Adult Consultation Clinic.
- The second half-day is spent at a school-based health center in the Rochester City School District.
- The third half-day is split for 6 months each between Rochester General Hospital's Adolescent Medicine Clinic and the Gender Health Services Clinic at Golisano Children’s Hospital.
- The fourth half-day is split for 6 months each between University Health Services on the undergraduate campus of the University of Rochester or Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and a combination of Transition Medicine, The Healing Connection Eating Disorder Partial Hospitalization Program, Pediatric Endocrinology, and the Bivona Child Advocacy Center for child abuse response.
Inpatient service time is at Golisano Children’s Hospital.
- Twelve weeks are dedicated to the inpatient adolescent service including patients admitted to the adolescent medicine service and inpatients in need of adolescent medicine consultations.
Inpatient responsibilities decrease over the three years of training to allow for protected research time.
Throughout all three years of the Adolescent Medicine Fellowship, fellows attend educational activities including the Adolescent Medicine Education Series (AMES), which are didactic sessions based on the content specifications of the Adolescent Medicine Boards and taught by faculty from across the Medical Center.
Research
Fellows explore their specific areas of interest and select their Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC). They initiate their scholarly activity project and research design with the assistance of their research mentor with whom they meet at least every other week. Fellows attend a weekly research seminar in conjunction with the General Academic Pediatrics fellows.
Quality Improvement
Fellows develop, implement, and complete a quality improvement project that aligns with the annual divisional QI goals.
Year 2
During their second year in the Adolescent Medicine Fellowship, fellows concentrate on improving clinical and teaching skills, while carrying out the scholarly activity project.
Clinical

- They continue with one half-day at the Adolescent and Young Adult Consultation Clinic.
- One half-day is split between several Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology sites (Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology at URMC and Planned Parenthood).
- The third and fourth half-days allow fellows to choose among a multitude of community- and hospital-based electives.
For trainees completing three years of training, eight weeks are spent on the inpatient adolescent medicine service. For trainees completing two years of training, twelve weeks are spent on the inpatient adolescent medicine service.
Research
- Fellows implement their research project including data collection and analysis with the goal of submitting an abstract to the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine annual meeting by the end of the second year.
- Fellows continue to attend weekly research seminar classes and meet at least every other week with their research mentor.
Quality Improvement
Fellows submit their QI project for presentation at a national meeting. Fellows write a manuscript and submit for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
