Curriculum
Year 1
In their first year of the Adolescent Medicine Fellowship, fellows concentrate on gaining both outpatient and inpatient clinical skills, while beginning to develop their scholarly activity project.
Clinical
Fellows dedicate three half-days per week to outpatient clinic.
- One half-day is spent at the Golisano Children’s Hospital Adolescent and Young Adult Consultation Clinic.
-
One half-day is split for 6 months each between a school-based health center in the Rochester City School District and University Health Services on the undergraduate campus of the University of Rochester or Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).
-
The third half-day is split for 6 months each between Rochester General Hospital's Adolescent Medicine Clinic and the Gender Health Services Clinic at Golisano Children’s Hospital.
Inpatient service time is at Golisano Children’s Hospital.
- Twelve weeks are dedicated to inpatient adolescent consultation services.
- Ten weeks are dedicated to patients admitted to the adolescent medicine service.
Inpatient responsibilities decrease over the three years of training to allow for protected research time.
Throughout all three years of the Adolescent Medicine Fellowship, fellows attend educational activities including the Adolescent Medicine Education Series (AMES), which are didactic sessions based on the content specifications of the Adolescent Medicine Boards and taught by faculty from across the Medical Center.
Research
Fellows explore their specific areas of interest and select their Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC). They initiate their scholarly activity project and research design with the assistance of their research mentor with whom they meet at least every other week. Fellows attend a weekly research seminar in conjunction with the General Pediatrics fellows.
Year 2
During their second year in the Adolescent Medicine Fellowship, fellows concentrate on improving clinical and teaching skills, while carrying out the scholarly activity project.
Clinical
Fellows dedicate three half-days per week to outpatient clinic.
- They continue with one half day at the Adolescent and Young Adult Consultation Clinic.
-
One half-day is split between several Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology sites (Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology at URMC and Planned Parenthood).
-
The third half day allows fellows to choose among a multitude of community and hospital based electives.
Eighteen weeks are spent on inpatient service, with half dedicated to consultations and the other half dedicated to patients on the adolescent medicine service.
Research
- Fellows implement their research project including data collection and analysis with the goal of submitting an abstract to the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine annual meeting by the end of the second year.
- Fellows continue to attend weekly research seminar classes and meet at least every other week with their research mentor.
Year 3
In the final year of the Adolescent Medicine Fellowship, fellows are given more autonomy to refine their clinical skills and achieve competency as an attending, hone their teaching skills and complete their scholarly activity project.
Clinical
Fellows dedicate two half-days per week to outpatient clinic.
- They continue with one half day at the Adolescent and Young Adult Consultation Clinic.
- One half day they select from electives based on their future employment interests and opportunities.
Twelve weeks are spent co-attending on the inpatient service, with half dedicated to consultations and half dedicated to patients on the adolescent medicine service.
Research
Fellows continue to attend weekly research seminar classes and meet at least every other week with their research mentor. With the guidance of their scholarship oversight committee, each fellow completes a research project and prepares a manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. Most fellows present their research at the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine's annual meeting.
