Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship

The Division’s Children’s Heart Center is a Strong Regional Program

Doctors in the operating room

  • An integrated program, the Children’s Heart Center’s expertise and collaborative team approach provides care for children from across upstate New York.
  • Well known for our cardiovascular medical and surgical services and outcomes for children with congenital heart conditions, we are ranked as one of the best children’s heart centers in New York state and have the second highest pediatric cardiothoracic surgical volume in the state.
  • Inpatients are housed in a dedicated Pediatric Cardiac Care Center providing centralized care for surgical and medical patients.
  • A close collaboration with pediatric cardiologists in Syracuse to the east and Buffalo to the west, allows the best possible care for virtually any pediatric cardiac service upstate New York’s children might need.

Our Mission

  • To provide a stimulating and supportive environment which maximizes each fellow's experience in patient care, teaching, and research, which will prepare board-eligible pediatricians for a career in pediatric cardiology.
  • To provide a broad exposure to cardiovascular disorders over a wide age range, to understand their associated problems, and to be knowledgeable of the resources available for intervention in these areas.
  • To provide a rich environment for learning in the areas of invasive and noninvasive tools of management of these patients.
  • To provide an opportunity to learn appropriate research methodologies in pediatric cardiovascular medicine and basic science.
  • To provide the fellow with the tools to improve his/her teaching abilities by giving him/her the opportunity to teach medical students and house officers and by providing excellent role models in our teaching faculty.

What Makes Us Unique

Research Funding

The Division of Pediatric Cardiology participates as a sub-site for the Yale University Center of the NIH/NHLBI -sponsored Pediatric Cardiac Genomics Consortium (PCGC), part of the Bench to Bassinet Program, which also includes the Pediatric Heart Network. Furthermore, members of the division hold grants from the NIH and other external foundations.

Support & Mentorship

The Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Vice Chair of Education meet quarterly with fellows from our 11 subspecialty training programs in an informal roundtable setting to offer mentorship and research guidance. The Department of Pediatrics provides financial support for each fellow to present at one national conference per year.

State-of-the-Art Children's Hospital

Our state-of-the-art children's hospital encompasses nearly 245,000 square feet of space dedicated to children and their families. Phase II, completed in late 2017, includes a new pediatric cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology laboratory, operating rooms, and the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit.

What Our Fellows Say...

Laura Boulas, D.O.

"The encouragement and support that we receive throughout our training here in Rochester is what makes this program so great and successful. The attendings, faculty, and staff are all so welcoming and truly want to see you flourish in whatever path you choose. The program is education driven, not service driven, thus the sole focus is on you obtaining all the skills and knowledge to succeed as a pediatric cardiologist."
