Electives

Throughout all three years of fellowship, fellows experience these elective rotations.

Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics

Pediatric Orthopedics has been on the US News and World Report Best Children’s Hospitals ranking for multiple years. Fellows gain an understanding of different diagnosis, evaluation and management as it relates to rheumatology. Throughout this rotation, fellows:

  • Become proficient in performing a complete musculoskeletal exam as they pertain to orthopedic and exercise-related problems
  • Develop the ability to formulate an appropriate diagnosis for an orthopedic or exercise-related problem
  • Understand risks, benefits, cost and expected outcomes of non-operative management, surgery, and post-operative rehabilitation

Physical Medicine Rehabilitation, Physical Therapy, and Occupational Therapy

At the Strong Rehabilitation center, our pediatric therapists care for children from infancy through teenage years. Fellows are exposed to children with acute injuries and long term conditions. Throughout this rotation, fellows:

  • Develop ability to order and interpret further diagnostic studies
  • Understand risks, benefits, costs and expected outcomes of non-operative management
  • Understand how physical and occupational therapies impact patients with rheumatic diseases
  • Observe physical therapy and occupational therapy sessions
  • Observe and understand appropriate clinical use of EMG/NCS

Adult Rheumatology

Fellows will gain experience evaluating, diagnosing, treating and monitoring adult patients with rheumatologic diseases in the emergency, inpatient and intensive care settings. It is important for pediatric fellows to have exposure to adult cases because they gain an understanding of the transition period from adolescence into adulthood. Throughout this rotation, fellows:

  • Develop an understanding of the presentation, history and complications of rheumatologic diseases
  • Expand upon the ability to interpret lab results, fluid analysis, radiologic imaging studies and interpretation of EMG/NCS
  • Develop the ability to formulate an appropriate therapeutic plan
  • Understand the role of diagnostic and therapeutic joint aspiration and injection in the inpatient setting

Allergy / Immunology

Pediatric rheumatology fellows are exposed to allergy and immunology, particularly in the context of rheumatologic and autoimmune diseases. Throughout this rotation, fellows will gain an understanding of the overlap between immunodeficiency and autoimmune diseases. Fellows will interpret results of allergy testing and immunologic studies, and evaluate and manage allergic conditions.
