Doug Stockman, MD, joined the faculty in early 1997. He graduated summa cum laude from St. Lawrence University in upstate New York for his undergraduate degree and the University of Rochester School of Medicine for his medical degree. Dr. Stockman completed his residency in Family Medicine from this Department in 1989.

He has a strong interest in global health and moved to Liberia, West Africa, in early 1990, but was forced to return to the U.S. due to the Liberian civil war. While waiting to return to Liberia, Dr. Stockman held diverse positions including private practice, urgent care, and occupational medicine. In 1994 he moved to Ghana, West Africa where he and his wife built and operated a rural health post; he returned to the U.S. after a very busy two years. Starting in 2003, Dr. Stockman took on the position of Director of Global and Refugee Health for the Department. He leads a medical team twice a year to a rural region of Honduras, Central America where on-going interventions are improving the health of the indigenous population. Dr. Stockman was the medical director of Highland Family Medicine (HFM) for 9 years. During his time in this position there were many positive changes. Some of these improvements included expanding the clinical practice to a new building and new practice model; the introduction of an electronic medical record; and gaining recognition as providers of excellence in diabetes care by the NCQA. Dr. Stockman also expanded the Department's mission of caring for the underserved by welcoming newly arrived refugees to the Practice. He personally has one of the largest population of refugee patients in the city with more than 60% of his patients being refugees from more than 20 countries.

After stepping down from his medical director role, Dr. Stockman has focused on the care of his patients. He believes that spending more face-to-face time with patients who suffer from multiple medical conditions leads to improved outcomes. It is through a strong collaboration between patient and clinician that the best chance for long term health will be realized. This approach has resulted in very high quality measures for Dr. Stockman's patients, compared to regional and national benchmarks.

When not at work, Dr. Stockman has some varied and unusual interests. He designed a passive solar home and personally installed the wind turbine and PV solar panel system that provides all the electricity for his home. He enjoys building all sorts of things, working on antique tractors, programming computers, woodworking, running, and reading. But the only things that really matter in his life are his wife and two daughters.
