Dr. Stevens' research focuses on pulmonary outcome of premature infants, with emphasis on the neonatal antecedents that cause preterm infants to require ongoing pulmonary care in childhood. Studies include two prospective clinical research projects investigating the effect of supplemental oxygen exposure on the risk of wheezing in later childhood. As a secondary study to the NICHD SUPPORT Trial, Dr. Stevens investigates the effect of differential oxygen exposure on symptomatic airway dysfunction in preterm infants. In a Rochester-based cohort, the level of early oxygen exposure and consequent oxidant stress is investigated as predictors of later symptomatic airway dysfunction in premature infants 28-32 weeks' gestation. Dr. Stevens is also interested in the effects of air pollution on fetal growth and preterm birth.
