As a Pulmonary and Critical Care physician, I see patients in the Medical Intensive Care Units at Strong Memorial Hospital and Highland Hospital as well as in the ambulatory clinic at Strong. In the outpatient setting, I focus on patients with interstitial lung disease, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, lung scarring related to autoimmune diseases, and sarcoidosis. I am a member of the URMC Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation Care center, which is also a WASOG Center of Excellence for Sarcoidosis, and work closely with the multidisciplinary diagnostic team to allow a timely and accurate diagnosis for each patient.

Dr. Nagel is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care. His graduate work examined the pathogenesis of vascular smooth muscle remodeling and smooth muscle cell phenotype switching, specifically exploring the role of Phosphodiesterase 1A in this process. As a pulmonologist, he has translated the skills he learned as a graduate student to examine the pathology of myofibroblast differentiation signaling as it applies to the development of pulmonary fibrosis. His fellowship research focused on the interactions between a family of proton-sensing G-Protein Coupled Receptors, the extracellular matrix, and Transforming Growth Factor-Beta dependent signaling pathways. His current work examines ways in which extracellular remodeling, specifically through elastin degradation, contribute to pulmonary fibrosis. The interstitial lung disease group is also involved in several clinical trials and was one of the nation's top enrolling institutions in the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation patient registry.
