Education and Training
I received my Bachelor of Science degree from Tufts University, majoring in Biopsychology and Child Development. I completed my Doctor of Medicine degree at Chicago Medical School. My training continued further at the University of Rochester Family Medicine Residency program with an area of concentration in maternal-child health. I am currently board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Obesity Medicine.

Philosophy
My patient care philosophy is centered on education and communication. I will always prioritize sharing medical information so that my patients truly understand how their body works. The human body is so interesting and I think it’s important for everyone to understand the science behind their diagnosis and health.

Special Interests
In addition to Family Medicine, I am interested in women’s health, diabetes, and obesity.

On a Personal Note
In my free time, I enjoy baking, hiking, traveling, scrapbooking and crafts, and running.

It's always difficult to start over with a new provider. I found it odd that I remained completely dressed and the only check up was listening to heart and lungs and pressing on my belly while I was seated in a chair. A lot of blood work was done too.

I wish she my main primary doctor. This was the most amazing healthcare I have ever received, she used critical thinking and problem solving without being asked. She went after causes instead of "bandaid fixes". She called me five days later to make sure my care was not delayed and ordered further testing, without me reaching out first, she was following up in my chart on her own. Dr. Shivani Sockanathan is amazing. Faith restored in primary care as I was almost looking for a new provider for the third time. I suppose I should stay at this practice even though she is not my doctor unfortunately.

Dr. S Sockanathan is an excellent addition to your staff at Canalside Family Medicine. I hope she stays there. I have only been a patient there for less than two years, during Wi time she is my third primary care physician. I hope to have some log term consistency this time. All my doctors have been great; I hope you can retain Dr. Sockanathan.
