About Me

Dr. Verwey earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology with minors in Psychology and Chemistry, and concentration in Neurobiology, from Le Moyne College. Dr. Verwey earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology with minors in Psychology and Chemistry, and concentration in Neurobiology, from Le Moyne College. She then pursued a Doctor of Medicine from Upstate Medical University, State University of New York, during which she completed the Rural Medical Education Scholars Program. Dr. Verwey completed residency training in Pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) Golisano Children’s Hospital, graduating with distinction in community health and advocacy. She served as Pediatric Chief Resident and clinical instructor in General Pediatrics, and was engaged in a variety of leadership roles, medical education, curriculum development, and Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives. During residency, Dr. Verwey developed a grant-supported resource brochure for inclusive recreation and leisure for individuals with disabilities in the Rochester community.

Dr. Verwey completed fellowship training in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics (DBP) at the URMC Golisano Children’s Hospital. During her fellowship, she completed Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND), and also earned a Masters of Public Health from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Her scholarly work explored the impact of neighborhood deprivation on pediatric health outcomes and she engaged in QI work regarding prescribing practices in the DBP clinic.

Her passions include advocacy around creating inclusive and equitable neighborhoods with a focus on inclusive and accessible recreation, leisure, and play. She has academic interests in health disparities and data driven advocacy to support community level interventions to improve the health of all members of the community.

Dr. Verwey joined the URMC Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics team as Assistant Professor in September 2023. She sees patients with a variety of developmental diagnoses through the Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics clinic at East River Road. She serves as Director of Inclusive Recreation through the Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities, where she leads efforts related to systems-level approach to enhancing inclusive and accessible recreation efforts. She is engaged within the community as a member of Common Ground Healthi Kids coalition, PlayROCs Advocacy Committee, and the Community Advisory Council. In addition, Dr. Verwey is the Division Co-Director for Resident Education, serving as core faculty for trainee education and curriculum development in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics.
