As a clinician, educator, and researcher in pulmonary and critical care medicine, I strive to improve the health of individuals with respiratory diseases significantly. With nearly 12 years of experience as an associate professor of medicine at the University of Buffalo and now as a faculty member at the University of Rochester, I am dedicated to fostering excellence in education. My role involves teaching medical students, residents, and fellows, ensuring they acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to provide high-quality care to patients with pulmonary diseases and critical illnesses.
In my clinical practice, primarily at Strong Memorial Hospital, I provide comprehensive care to patients with various pulmonary conditions, including ARDS, asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease, pleural disease, pulmonary hypertension, and lung cancer. Additionally, I am actively involved in the Mary Parkes Asthma Center, evaluating patients in the outpatient setting who present with pulmonary disorders. Collaborating with a dedicated team of healthcare professionals, I strive to deliver exceptional care across multiple practice locations.
Beyond my clinical, research, and educational activities, I am dedicated to leadership and service in the field. As an executive board member of the New York State Thoracic Society (NYSTS), I have held positions such as program chair of the annual conference, secretary, treasurer, vice president and currently serve as the president-elect. Additionally, I am a chapter council representative to the ATS and have served as the president of the ATS's Council of Chapters Committee and ATS board of directors. These roles allow me to contribute to the advancement of the field, impact global health, and transform patient care.
In summary, my passion lies in advancing the field of pulmonary and critical care medicine through clinical practice, research, education, leadership, and service. My focus on computational approaches, multi-omic data analysis, and guideline development allows me to make significant contributions to understanding COPD pathogenesis, identifying therapeutic targets, and improving patient outcomes. I strive to empower the next generation of healthcare professionals to provide exceptional care through my dedication to education and professional development.

Throughout my research career, I have been engaged in a diverse range of studies and clinical trials aimed at advancing our understanding of various diseases and enhancing patient outcomes. These endeavors have been supported by prestigious organizations, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), and the Department of Defense (DoD) . The recognition and funding provided by these esteemed agencies have empowered me to conduct innovative investigations and make significant contributions to the field.
One of the main focuses of my research has been chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a complex respiratory condition associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Collaborating with renowned experts, I have explored the intricate mechanisms driving COPD pathogenesis, particularly the network biology of pathogen-host interactions during disease exacerbations. As a co-investigator, I have played a crucial role in analyzing transcriptome and microbiome data obtained from clinical samples. This research, funded by esteemed organizations, aims to uncover novel insights into COPD exacerbations and identify potential therapeutic targets.
Additionally, I have actively contributed to the study of COVID-19, a global pandemic that has posed significant challenges to healthcare systems worldwide. As a site principal investigator, I have made substantial contributions to two prominent clinical trials investigating potential treatments for COVID-19. These trials, funded by the NIH and NCATS/NIH, are evaluating the efficacy and safety of immune-based interventions for COVID-19. My responsibilities have included overseeing trial selection, site activation, and study execution, with a focus on maximizing enrollment and data quality. The outcomes of these trials have the potential to shape treatment strategies and improve patient outcomes.
Furthermore, I have explored the connection between the airway microbiome and lung cancer in a COPD cohort, offering valuable insights into the complex relationships between these conditions.
In my research, I have also focused on investigating the role of galectin-3 in asthma. Galectin-3 is a protein involved in inflammation and tissue remodeling. By studying its implications in asthma, I aim to gain insights into the underlying mechanisms of the disease and potentially identify novel therapeutic targets. This research contributes to our understanding of asthma pathogenesis and may lead to the development of more effective treatment strategies for individuals with this chronic respiratory condition.
In addition to translational and clinical research, I actively engage in developing and implementing clinical practice guidelines, utilizing the GRADE methodology, and advancing evidence-based medicine. As a member of the American Thoracic Society (ATS), I have played a critical role in creating guidelines for the treatment of COPD and interstitial lung disease. I additionally co-authored surviving sepsis guidelines for COVID-19 management during the COVID-19 pandemic. These guidelines, based on rigorous evaluation of the available evidence, optimize patient care and ensure standardized approaches to management.
In summary, my research journey is dedicated to unraveling the complexities of respiratory diseases, identifying therapeutic targets, and making meaningful contributions to patient care. Through collaborations, funding support, and guideline development, I aim to transform patient care, improve outcomes, and shape the future of pulmonary medicine.
