Dr. Riera was born and raised in the Boston area. She earned a B.S. in Biology from Duke University and completed her medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She then completed general surgery residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, during which Dr. Riera worked for two years as a T32 research fellow to pursue research interests. Dr. Riera completed a AAST Acute Care Surgery Fellowship at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and graduated as the first fellow to complete the Pediatric Surgery Subtrack with an emphasis on pediatric trauma experience. Dr. Riera has a special interest in pediatric trauma and is looking forward to being the bridge between the pediatric and adult trauma systems.

Dr. Riera is certified by the American Board of Surgery in general surgery and surgical critical care. She is a member of the American College of Surgeons, Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, Pediatric Trauma Society, American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and Association of Women Surgeons.
