I believe that children with cancer do best when they and their parents are full partners on the treatment team. That means sitting down, taking time, listening to them and their struggles, showing them you care, responding to them with openness and honesty, and offering our expertise (and our team's expertise) to meet their needs.

Pediatric hematology/oncology is an exciting and challenging field, and I feel very lucky and privileged to have an opportunity to work in this field. We are doing so much better than when I started a quarter century ago, but there is still much to be done and I still strive to make a difference for the children we treat. .My areas of expertise are pediatric neuro-oncology, in addition to adult and pediatric palliative care. I am just a regular guy who happened to choose pediatric hematology/ oncology as my life's work. My dress shirt and tie is a work costume – my real outfit is jeans and a T-shirt!

My interests are focused on brain tumors in adults and children, and palliative care. I have conducted, and continue to conduct clinical trials for both children and adults with newly diagnosed and recurrent brain tumors. I have conducted a clinical trial through the Children's Oncology Group, and my current studies are local and multi-institutional investigator-initiated pharmaceutical-sponsored trials. I also have written review articles and chapters on brain tumors and palliative care, and conducted retrospective studies related to palliative care for children with cancer.
