Jin Xiao, DDS, PhD, is an Associate Professor and the Founding Director of Perinatal Oral Health at the University of Rochester Medical Center's Eastman Institute for Oral Health. She leads the pioneering Eastman Dental Pregnancy and Infant Oral Health Program, which delivers comprehensive oral health services to pregnant women and their young children. Dr. Xiao also serves as the Associate Director of the KL2 Career Development Program at the University of Rochester's Clinical and Translational Science Institute. Her leadership extends to international scientific organizations, where she holds key roles such as President-Elect of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) e-Oral Health Network, President of the IADR Clinical and Translational Science Network. She also serves as the Scientific Councilor of the American Dental Association. The prestigious Council is comprised of about 20 renowned U.S. oral health researchers and clinicians who assist the ADA in developing policies that sustain the science basis of the dental profession, while supporting product standards and evaluation, research priorities, safety and efficacy of patient procedures, the ADA Seal of Acceptance Program and much more.

Dr. Xiao earned her DDS and completed her specialty training in endodontics at the West China College of Stomatology, Sichuan University. She pursued a joint PhD in oral microbiology at the West China College of Stomatology and completed the last two years of training at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health. Her postgraduate training includes an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health and a General Practice residency at Strong Memorial Hospital, University of Rochester Medical Center.

Dr. Xiao conducts a full spectrum of translational research to promote maternal and child oral health and establish oral health equity at birth in underserved communities. Her research expertise includes maternal and infant oral health clinical and translational research, mDentistry, oral microbiome, and cross-kingdom bacteria and yeast interaction in dental caries. As a principal investigator of NIH- and NSF-funded clinical and translational studies, Dr. Xiao leads initiatives such as the Oral Microbiome in Early Infancy (OMEI) project, which investigates the role of oral Candida in early childhood caries, maternal transmission of cariogenic microorganisms, and the impact of oral pathogens on children's health. She also spearheads the AICaries and SMARTeeth projects, which utilize AI-powered smartphone technology and community engagement strategies to improve access to care and promote early detection and prevention of oral disease.

Mentorship has been a fundamental aspect of Dr. Xiao's academic career. She has provided mentorship to over 50 mentees, encompassing junior faculty, postdoctoral dental residents, PhD, master’s, and undergraduate students.
