Dr. Shifera offers expert medical care to patients suffering from inflammatory and infectious eye diseases, including complications of autoimmune disorders.

He received his medical degree from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, in 1989. There he practiced general medicine until 1999. He relocated to the United States and completed a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology (at Albert Einstein College of Medicine) and Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and UC San Francisco).Dr. Shifera then went on to do his residency in ophthalmology at University of Florida, Gainesville. After completing a subsequent fellowship in Uveitis and Ocular Inflammation at Oregon Health Sciences University, he joined the faculty of Johns Hopkins University’s Wilmer Eye Institute, where he spent five years.

Dr. Shifera’s research Interests include ocular sarcoidosis, birdshot chorioretinitis and various inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, and he has participated in numerous clinical trials related to these conditions. He has an extensive record of peer reviewed publications and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, and an active fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
