Ghinwa K. Dumyati, MD, '91M (Res)
Throughout her career, Dr. Ghinwa K. Dumyati has held many important roles at URMC. She is professor of medicine in the infectious diseases division at the School of Medicine and Dentistry and at the Center for Community Health and Prevention (CCHP), where she is also the director of the Communicable Diseases Surveillance and Prevention (CDSP) program. Additionally, she also holds a clinical appointment as attending physician at Strong Memorial Hospital (SMH).
Dumyati received her bachelor of science in biology and chemistry and her medical degree from the American University of Beirut School of Medicine in Lebanon. She completed her residencies in internal medicine at SMH and Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Additionally, Dumyati completed
a fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of Rochester.
As director of the CDSP program, Dumyati works in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Emerging Infections Program and the New York State Department of Health to focus on health care associated infections and antimicrobial resistance. Alongside hospital multidisciplinary teams and several local nursing homes, she also leads quality improvement projects to reduce the burden of health care associated infections.
Dumyati holds several national leadership roles. She is a fellow of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America and a member of the Quality Measures Task Force and its long-term care committee. Dumyati is also a member of the Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine (AMDA), serving as co-chair of its infection advisory committee and on the COVID-19 taskforce. She has authored nearly 100 peer-reviewed publications.
Among many awards, Dumyati received the Greater Rochester Quality Council Performance Excellence Platinum Award in 2014. This was the first platinum award given for performance excellence defined by "the exhibition of excellent teamwork and results across multiple organizations," for a project to prevent C. difficile infections across all Rochester hospitals. In 2018, she received the Meliora Award, given in recognition of teamwork that exemplifies the University of Rochester motto of Meliora, or ever better, for the C. difficile infection prevention task force at URMC. Most recently, Dumyati received the 2021 Service Award from AMDA in recognition of her service to their community of members and stakeholders during the COVID-19 pandemic.
