Stephen A. McLeod-Bryant ’80, ’84M (MD)

With over 30 years of experience in providing care to people with serious and persistent mental illnesses, Dr. Stephen A. McLeod-Bryant is clinical associate professor in the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Miller School of Medicine (MSOM), part of the University of Miami Health Sciences Center. He was recently appointed a co-chair in the dean’s task force on structural racism and subsequently headed the department’s diversity and inclusion committee. 

McLeod-Bryant was accepted into the third cohort of the Rochester Plan program in his sophomore year. He received a bachelor of arts in cybernetics from the University of Rochester. He earned a doctorate from University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD), where he was the only person in his class to specialize in psychiatry, inspired from his interactions with Drs. George L. Engel and John Romano. McLeod-Bryant completed his residency in psychiatry at the Tufts-New England Medical Center.

McLeod-Bryant is interested in how different cultures impact the practice of psychiatry and patient outcomes. While he treats the most severely mentally ill patients, he provides talk therapy over medication management. He is a life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), president of the South Carolina Psychiatric Association, and member of the American College of Psychiatrists. McLeod-Bryant served as the APA Caucus of Black Psychiatrists’ Representative to the APA’s Assembly for 13 years. He was president-elect of the Black Psychiatrists of America in January 2022.

McLeod-Bryant has won numerous awards including the APA’s Solomon Carter Fuller Award and Jeanne Spurlock, MD, Minority Fellowship Achievement Award, and multiple faculty teaching awards at the Medical University of South Carolina and MSOM including MSOM’s annual Inpatient Clinical Teaching Award for the past four years. He was awarded the Junior Faculty Teaching Award from the University of Miami department of psychiatry in 2016. Additionally, he was named Medical Director of the Quarter by the Medical University Hospital Authority. He has published and authored numerous articles advancing the field of behavioral health and presented nationally and internationally over 125 times.
