Patients that Need Accommodations

At Strong Memorial Hospital we are here to serve you. If you need assistance due to a disability, we have a number of services available to help you feel at ease. Our disability services also extend to your support person(s), family, and friends when they come to visit you at the hospital.

Professional American Sign Language interpreters are on-call, 24 hours per day, for interpretation at no cost. These interpreters are specialists in communicating health-related information. If you need an interpreter, please contact Interpreter Services at (585) 275-4778.

If you have any questions about interpretive services for the Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing please call Interpreter Services at (585) 275-4778. Patients can also ask their nurse.

Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing

We believe that every person has the right to clear and thorough communication regarding their health care. We have several resources available for our Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing patients, families and visitors.

  • Professional American Sign Language interpreters are on-call, 24 hours per day, for in-person translations at no cost. These interpreters are specialists in communicating health-related information. If you need an interpreter, please contact Strong Memorial Hospital Interpreter Services at (585) 275-4778.
  • Assistive listening devices and closed caption TV are available. Patients can ask their nurse for assistance.
  • Video phones are available to patients, families and visitors. Strong Memorial Hospital has two video phones. One is available located off the Strong Memorial Hospital Lobby. To access this phone, check in at the Information Desk to obtain a key. The other video phone is available by request through the Communication Center by calling (585) 275-2222. This phone is reserved for overnight and emergency room patients.

Visually Impaired

We understand the way-finding challenges facing our visually impaired patients, families and visitors. The University of Rochester Medical Center’s (URMC) Ambassador Program has several services that can help you. Ambassadors are URMC staff members who work closely with volunteers, parking valet staff and URMC departments to provide way-finding assistance and other resources for patients, families, and visitors. Conveniently located at the main Information Desk in the lobby of Strong Memorial Hospital and other key points throughout the campus, Ambassadors are ready at a moment’s notice to provide assistance.

  • A member of the Ambassador Program is always available to walk with you and provide guided assistance to wherever you need to go when at Strong Memorial Hospital or on the URMC campus. Your Ambassador will wait to escort you back as well.
  • Signage throughout Strong Memorial Hospital is written in Braille.
  • Wheelchair assistance is available upon request for patients, families and visitors.
  • A large motorized transporter can provide comfortable and convenient transportation for anyone who needs assistance walking.
  • A small fleet of courtesy golf carts can get you to most places on designated floors within Strong Memorial Hospital.
  • An Ambassador will be happy to contact external transportation services such as taxis or medical cab transportation for you to bring you to Strong Memorial Hospital and home. Please note that you will be responsible for external transportation costs.

Difficulty Walking

Our Ambassador Program is also available to help those who need assistance walking. Ambassadors are URMC staff members who work closely with volunteers, parking valet staff and URMC departments to provide way-finding assistance and other resources for patients, families, and visitors. Conveniently located at the main Information Desk in the lobby of Strong Memorial Hospital and other key points throughout the campus, Ambassadors are ready at a moment’s notice to provide assistance.

  • Wheelchair assistance is available upon request for patients, families and visitors.
  • A large motorized transporter can provide comfortable and convenient transportation for anyone who needs assistance walking.
  • A club car can provide comfortable and convenient transportation for anyone who needs assistance walking.
  • An Ambassador will be happy to contact external transportation services such as taxis or medical cab transportation for you to bring you to Strong Memorial Hospital and home. Please note that you will be responsible for external transportation costs.

You can contact the Ambassadors by calling the Information Desk at (585) 275-2182. Or you can simply go to the Information Desk in the main lobby where an Ambassador will be able to assist you. The Ambassador Program at the Information Desk is open 24 hours per day.
