The Day Before Your Surgery

Food & Drink

Do not eat, chew, or drink anything (including gum, candy, mints) after twelve midnight on the day of your surgery. For your safety, surgery may be delayed or cancelled if you eat or chew anything after twelve midnight. Do not use chewing tobacco or cough drops.

Clear liquids are OK up to 4 hours before surgery. Clear liquids include: water, apple juice, clear sports drinks (Gatorade), clear carbonated beverages, black coffee, and clear tea. Do not drink any milk, cream, orange juice, or use powdered creamers.

Skin Care

Do not apply lotions, creams, nail polish, or make-up on the day of surgery. These items can be irritating to your skin and eyes while under anesthesia. Remove false eyelashes.

Follow the Pre-Surgical Testing Center (Center for Perioperative Medicine) or surgeon’s office instructions regarding skin cleansing.

Medications

Follow the Pre-Surgical Testing Center (Center for Perioperative Medicine) or surgeon’s office instructions provided to you regarding your medications. Certain medications will interfere with your surgical care and must be stopped to avoid cancellation of your surgery.

If you were instructed by your physician to take any medications the day of surgery, please do so with one ounce of water.

Arrival Time

Your arrival time on the day of surgery is 1½ to 2 hours prior to your surgery start time. For example, if your surgery is scheduled for 7:30 a.m., you will be asked to arrive between 5:45 a.m. and 6:15 a.m. Allow extra time for traffic and parking. If you are delayed please call us at (585) 276-8256 as soon as possible. Please leave a message on the answering machine if calling before 5:30 a.m.
