URMC conducts research on possible COVID-19 nasal booster

David Topham, PhD, director of the Translational Immunology and Infectious Disease Institute, spoke to Rochester First (Dec. 2) about a potential alternative to COVID booster shots: a nasal puff. Researchers are working on this new type of booster that can elicit a different body response. “The idea is that if you have an immune response that’s local to the tissue where the pathogens are entering the body, then it’s going to be more effective. And we have lots of research that supports that idea,” Topham said.

The H5N1 virus, also known as avian or bird flu, is once again in the news and on the radar of scientists and public health officials as a growing number of infections have been found in dairy cattle and farm workers.
David Topham, PhD, a professor of Microbiology and Immunology and director of the University of Rochester Translational Immunology and Infectious Disease Institute, has been studying the H5N1 and other influenza viruses for 27 years.
