Sensory Phenotyping to Enhance Neuropathic Pain Drug Development (SPENDD) (NINDS UG3NS130592).

This study aims to evaluate the utility of phenotypes obtained using a bedside quantitative sensory testing (QST) battery for predicting response to analgesic treatments. Dr. Gewandter is the MPI of this grant with her collaborators Dr. Roy Freeman, MD (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center) and Rob Edwards, PhD (Brigham and Women’s Hospital). The study will be enrolling participants with painful distal sensory polyneuropathy (e.g., pain in the feet from diabetes or chemotherapy) at 5 sites throughout the U.S.

Promoting high-quality pain treatment trials through mentorship of junior investigators: A focus on study conduct and method development. (NINDS K24NS126861).

This mentoring K award supports Dr. Gewandter’s effort to mentor junior investigators hoping to pursue a career in clinical pain research. Working with Dr. Gewandter mentees learn what it takes to design and enroll participants in clinical trials and perform and publish secondary data analyses that aim to inform the design of future clinical trials. In total, this grant has supported mentoring of 3 clinician faculty members, 2 junior faculty members, 6 residents, 1 postdoctoral fellow, 4 medical students, and 2 graduate students.

Recently Completed

Wireless transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS) for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN): A phase II randomized clinical trial (NCI R21 CA235389).

This multisite clinical trial was conducted through the NCI Community Oncology Research Program(NCORP) with the help of the URCC NCORP Research Base. It showed promising effects of TENS for sharp/shooting pain, hot/burning pain, and cramping associated with CIPN. The results were published in The Journal of Pain and Dr. Gewandter is currently seeking funding to perform a confirmatory trial based on these results.
