Diversity and Inclusion

The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics is committed to establishing and maintaining a learning and research environment that is welcoming and supportive for all people regardless of race, religion, creed, gender/gender identity, and sexual preference. We recognize that involvement of people of different backgrounds and interests leads to the most successful conduct of teaching, research, and administration and, thus, value the contributions of a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff. In keeping with these views, we aim to recruit the broadest possible range of department members. A departmental committee has been formed to implement and promote programs to achieve enhance diversity and inclusion.

To provide the best possible working environment, the Department endeavors to maintain a collegial, collaborative environment that is free from harassment, discrimination, bullying, and other intolerant behaviors. A clear set of procedures based on university-wide policy has been established for Department members to pursue if they feel that these standards have been violated. The Department has also appointed a Diversity and Inclusion Officer responsible for disseminating and implementing these procedures.

The Department recognizes that elements of racism and other forms of discrimination are deeply entrenched in society and, thus, strongly supports the University of Rochester’s Anti-Racism Action Plan for addressing underlying causes and manifestations of such injustice. We are also committed to raising our level of awareness of these issues and educating ourselves further about their underlying causes.
