Battle of the Beaks Committee Continues to Soar
Battle of the Beaks pits two East Avenue rivals against each other each year for charity. For the past six years, the students at Nazareth and St. John Fisher Colleges have embraced the rivalry and used it, not only to raise school spirit, but also to raise money for a great cause.
Each year a committee of student athletes puts in countless hours of hard work and preparation in order to organize the iconic athletic event on campus that benefits the children at Golisano Children’s Hospital. This year, the committee celebrated the 6th annual Battle of the Beaks men and women’s basketball games.
The annual basketball games are only one facet of the Battle of the Beaks fundraising platform. The committee has developed the Winter Walk for Strong Kids and 2013 marked its 4th annual event. The event features a family-friendly walk around campus and various indoor activities for kids of all ages to enjoy. The committee also works collaboratively with the Student Athlete Advisory Committee to organize the student athlete semi-formal dance.
“Being able to come together as student athletes to design successful fundraisers year after year is just incredible to be a part of,” said Lindsey Smith, student chair of the committee. “For us, Battle of the Beaks is a fun way to rally around the rivalry. To know that every penny we raise is going to the hospital and could even help to save a child’s life just makes it even more rewarding.”
In 2013, the Battle of the Beaks committee raised $14,500 with the collective success of all three of its events. Over the past six years, the committee has been able to give $86,700 to Golisano Children’s Hospital in support of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, as well as the Music Therapy and Nursing Education departments.
