Surgery
The Most Advanced Pediatric Surgeries
When David and Debbi prepared to adopt Leah, a 16-month-old child from Guping, China, they knew she was in serious need of medical care. Due to a gastrointestinal defect, little Leah was not able to pass solid waste out of her body.
Even before they left China, they began consulting with Walter Pegoli, M.D., by e-mail about surgery at Golisano Children’s Hospital. Over the next year, Dr. Pegoli performed four complex surgeries on Leah, rebuilding parts of her digestive tract.
Leah is now an active and happy little girl. As one might imagine, her parents are even happier.
Supporting a Premier Pediatric Surgery Center
Since its founding in the mid-1990s, the Pediatric Surgery Program at Golisano Children’s Hospital has grown by leaps and bounds. The program made advanced pediatric surgeries available to children throughout the region, fulfilling a critical demand.
Still, the need for pediatric surgeries has grown exponentially. We currently perform upwards of 21,000 surgeries on children annually. Given the growth in demand and the need to keep families together here in upstate NY, we must now expand to perform 30,000 surgeries each year.
The need is great, but the rewards are much greater. With your support, we can help more and more children like Leah.

-
Pediatric Surgical Programs
Golisano Children’s Hospital has developed a reputation for excellence in general, cardiac, craniofacial, orthopaedic, and spinal surgery for children. Your gift will help us expand these services, ensuring that we can meet the rising demand for advanced pediatric surgery. -
Recruiting Pediatric Surgeons
Treating more children requires the recruitment of more top doctors. We have a current need for more pediatric surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other specialists. This expansion will also enable us to treat children who are more seriously ill or injured, through pediatric trauma, burn care, and transplant programs. -
Pediatric Surgical Training Program
Our country has a serious shortage of pediatric surgeons, and there are only about 30 pediatric surgical training programs in the U.S. Through the development of a Pediatric Surgery Fellowship Program, we will be able to prepare the next generation of pediatric surgeons right here in Rochester. As a result, we will help both our region and our country to meet the needs of children requiring expert surgical care.
