Holidays
Fourth of July
- View fireworks from a safe distance
- Wear hearing protection
Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa
- Make sure all decorative lighting is in working condition and there are no frayed wires, or loose connections as they are a fire hazard
- Do not leave candles or matches within a child’s reach
- Remove and supervise your child around potential choking hazards.
- Keep breakable items out of your child’s reach
Halloween
- Use crosswalks, sidewalks and face traffic when walking where there are no sidewalks.
- Be attentive to surroundings, do not be distracted by electronic devices
- Costumes should be reflective and fit properly to prevent trips or falls
- Choose face paint instead of masks which can obstruct a child’s vision
Summer Safety
Sun Safety
- Wear sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 15
- Avoid the heat and stay hydrated.
- Wear light weight clothing, sunglasses with UV protection and a hat for shade.
Water Safety
- Children should be supervised by an adult at all times when in water –(pool, lake, etc.)
- Start swimming lessons early for children as it is a first step toward water safety. Remember, swim lessons don’t make kids “drown proof”
Boating Safety
- Children under 12 must wear an approved personal floatation device (PFT) (Life Jacket) all times when boating - including kayaks, canoes and row boats.
Winter Safety
Frostbite
- This condition happens when the skin and outer tissues become frozen. Frostbite can occur on fingers, toes, ears and nose.
- Dress in layers to stay warm and dry. Wear a hat, scarf and gloves and keep ears covered.
- Dress babies in one more layer of clothing than an adults would wear in the same conditions
Winter Sports
- Sledding
- Children should be supervised by an adult
- Never go down a hill face first or stand on a sled
- Sled feet first or sitting up, kept away from motor vehicles
- Best practice is to wear a helmet.
- Ice skating
- Ice skate on approved surfaces
- Wear protective gear including a helmet
- Skate in same direction as crowd
