What to do if Your Child Gets Burned

No matter how careful and vigilant a parent may be, accidents sometimes happen. If your child gets burned, immediate action will soothe the pain and speed healing.

For first or second degree burns:

  • Run cold water over the burn immediately (do not apply ice or butter).
  • Cover the area with a clean bandage or cloth
  • For a second degree burn, do not break a blister that may appear, and after pain has subsided, apply an antibacterial ointment to speed healing.

For more serious burns:

  • See a healthcare professional immediately.
  • Cover burn with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Do not apply any ointments, ice, or butter.
