Preventing Date Rape

Knowing where your teen is at all times and who they are with is one of the best preventative measures a parent can take. Sometimes, however, harm is inflicted by people we know and may even trust. Unfortunately, date rape is one of those occurrences. Date rape occurs when someone familiar will not take no for an answer and forces another into the act of sex.

There are steps you can take to prevent this traumatic crime. Following are prevention steps for you to share with your child. Be advised—although most victims of date rape are girls and women, it can happen to guys too.

  • Know where your daughter or son is and who they are with. Teens—be sure to let your parents know where you are and who you are with at all times.
  • Go to places where there are other people around.
  • If you do not know your date very well, or if you feel uncomfortable going out alone, suggest going on a group date.
  • Do not use drugs or alcohol that may alter your behavior or decision-making ability.
  • Be sure to carry enough money with you to make a phone call or call a cab.
  • Remember that "no" means "no." If you do not wish to have sex, clearly say no. And if you are told "no," respect that answer and do not try to persuade your date to change his or her mind.

Getting Help

Sometimes, even when a person has taken every precaution, this crime can happen anyway. If you are a victim of date rape, or if your child or a friend has been raped, be sure to seek help immediately.
