A tracheostomy may be needed, but is not limited to, the following conditions:
- Aspiration
- Bronchopulmonary dysplasia
- Chronic respiratory failure
- Congenital heart failure
- Craniofacial anomalies
- Failure to extubate
- Ineffective airway clearance
- Laryngeal stenosis
- Neuromuscular deficiency
- Pulmonary hypoplasia
- Subglottic stenosis
- Trauma
- Tumors of the larynx, trachea or pharynx
- Vascular malformations
- Lymphatic malformations
- Vocal cord paralysis
