Latest Community Health Indicators Now Available

RocHealthData now has updated data for key clinical measures of the region’s health, including childhood and adult obesity, diabetes control rates and blood pressure control rates. As in the previous years’ data for the 13-county region, the population health dataset contains clinical data at a granular level – by county, age, and sex. For the most recent years (2020 and 2021), data are available by race and ethnicity.

With a total sample of more than 750,000 observations, the 2021 Community Health Indicators Report was commissioned by Common Ground Health (CGH) with data collected by Rochester Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO), the region’s trusted health information exchange.

Foodlink Added to List of Approved Caterers for University

The University of Rochester added Foodlink to its list of approved caterers in September. Now, any UR department can order from Foodlink when purchasing food services for University events.

The new relationship allows the University to support Foodlink's mission to leverage the power of food to end hunger and build healthier communities, which aligns with the Center for Community Health & Prevention's longstanding commitment to tackle food insecurity and promote healthy lifestyles.

Improving Health of Adolescents and Young Adults Focus of Pathway-to-Pilot Awardees

Last fall, 20 individuals from the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) and community organizations came together to learn about collaborative, community-focused research in the Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) training course. The course is co-administered by the University of Rochester Clinical & Translational Science Institute (UR CTSI) and Center for Community Health & Prevention. Two teams comprised of researchers and organization leaders received support for their community-informed research with Pathway-to-Pilot awards.

Susan Gasparino Named Medical Director of the Center for Community Health & Prevention

​Susan Gasparino, MD, MPH, director of Child and Adolescent Programming at UR Medicine’s Center for Community Health & Prevention (CCHP), has been promoted to Medical Director of Clinical and Community-based Programs at the CCHP. Gasparino, a general academic pediatrician at Golisano Children’s Hospital, has also been appointed an assistant professor of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry. She officially assumed these roles on September 1.

Health Equity Pilot Awards Fund Research Projects Focused on Violence Prevention & Caregiver Support

​The Office of Health Equity Research’s “Pilot Studies in Health Equity” award supports research in the Office’s key community-identified priority areas: safe and healthy housing, prevention of mental health and substance use disorders, prevention of gun violence, prevention of re-incarceration, and prevention and management of chronic diseases.

This year, the Office of Health Equity Research (OHER), part of the Center for Community Health & Prevention (CCHP) at the University of Rochester Medical Center, is proud to fund two research projects in these critical areas.

The 15^th annual Dr. David Satcher Community Health Improvement Awards celebrated University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) faculty and staff, as well as their community partners, for their dedication to helping people lead healthier lives, and advancing health equity, throughout our region. Presented by the URMC’s Center for Community Health & Prevention (CCHP), the event featured keynote speaker Sacoby Wilson, MS, PhD, director of Community Engagement, Environmental Justice, and Health at the University of Maryland School of Public Health.  

Diane Morse Named Associate Director of the Office of Health Equity Research

Diane Morse, MD, has been named associate director of the Office of Health Equity Research (OHER), now part of the Center for Community Health & Prevention at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC). Dr. Morse is an internal medicine physician and associate professor of Psychiatry and Internal Medicine at the URMC. An avid researcher with particular interest in the health care needs of individuals in the criminal legal system, domestic violence, and health equity, she also leads the WISH-TC (Wellness Initiative Supporting Health Transitions) clinic at Jordan Health.

Edith Williams Named Director of the Center for Community Health & Prevention

After a nearly year-long search, URMC CEO Mark Taubman, MD, named Edith Williams, MS, PhD, director of the Center for Community Health & Prevention (CCHP). Williams joined URMC in 2022 as the founding director of the Office of Health Equity Research.

"The CCHP has provided a critical connection between our Medical Center and the communities we serve for nearly 20 years," said Taubman, who is also dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry. "As a Rochester native with deep experience in health equity research, Dr. Williams is perfectly poised to lead the Center and build on URMC's deep commitment to community health."

Emerging Infections Program Receives $4.185 Million Grant Renewal

UR Medicine’s Center for Community Health & Prevention (CCHP), in collaboration with the New York State Department of Health, has recently secured a significant annual grant of $4,185,700 million through a competitive renewal process from the CDC Emerging Infections Program (EIP). This five-year grant underscores the enduring commitment and success of the NYS EIP, which has received continuous funding for nearly three decades.

The EIP operates as a robust network, currently comprised of 10 state health departments, focused on utilizing public health practices to effectively address emerging infections. In collaboration with academic institutions, laboratories, and other public health entities, the program plays a crucial role in generating population-based communicable disease data. This data, essential for monitoring disease patterns, evaluating vaccine effectiveness, and identifying at-risk populations, is instrumental in shaping public health policies and interventions.
