Make Appointments & Get Care

What are ACL injuries?

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee joins the upper and lower leg bones. When the ACL tears, the knee becomes less stable, particularly when running or cutting in sports. This causes pain, reduced function, and often further injury and arthritis.

ACL injuries often happen when the knee twists or bends to the side, or from several abnormal movements at the same time.

UR Medicine's Treatments for ACL Injuries

If you suspect you have an ACL injury, UR Medicine offers Orthopaedic Urgent Care. Not a walk-in clinic, it is designed for injured patients to have a scheduled visit within 24-hours of you doctor's call.

Our team of experts works closely with you to decide which treatment options are best for you. We start with advanced diagnostic procedures to determine the full extent of your injury. With this information, we can decide which treatment approach will bring you the best outcome:

  • Conservative treatments: rest, medication, and physical therapy can be effective, depending on the extent of the injury.
  • Surgical treatments: using a tiny camera slipped through a small incision, our surgeons can see inside your injured joint. They watch their progress on a large video monitor while they repair the damaged ligament using advanced surgical techniques.

What Sets Us Apart?

UR Medicine's Orthopaedics & Physical Performance is a national leader in treating knee pain and injury.

Our surgeons bring decades of experience and training in all of the most advanced treatments (according to a study by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, doctors who perform thousands of knee replacement surgeries have the best outcomes).

All of our doctors treating ACL injuries are fellowship-trained—the highest level of achievement in their field. Collegiate and professional athletes, who need the highest quality surgical reconstruction, rely on our surgeons.

And our brand-new Medicine Orthopaedics & Physical Performance Center is one of the largest and most complete ambulatory orthopaedics facilities in the country. We’ve built a turf area for rehab and athletic workouts, plus therapy pools for rehab with less stress on the body. The new facility also uses the highest-tech imaging system available, to better diagnose our patients.
