Diabetes in Pregnancy Program

Diabetes in Pregnancy Program

A diabetes diagnosis can happen before or during pregnancy and may lead to complications for both the parent and the baby. Managing diabetes during pregnancy can be difficult due to the need for regular medication adjustments and close monitoring.

To better serve our patients, UR Medicine Maternal-Fetal Medicine has created the Diabetes in Pregnancy Program (DiPP), which supports education, management, delivery planning, and long-term care transition for pregnant individuals with diabetes.

What to Expect from the Diabetes in Pregnancy Program

.Our multidisciplinary team of providers caring for patients in this program include experts from High-Risk Obstetrics, Endocrinology, and Nutrition. Your providers will work together to develop coordinated plans before, during, and after pregnancy.

During your pregnancy, the DiPP team offers regular advice, often through Zoom, about blood sugar monitoring, medication management, and delivery timing. However, you can still receive routine prenatal care from your local OB provider.

Every week, DiPP team members reviews patients in the program to make sure the obstetrics and endocrine teams are fully prepared to manage your overall pregnancy and delivery care.

Continuous Glucose Monitoring

It can be challenging to check your blood sugar several times a day. The DiPP team can provide and interpret continuous glucose monitoring for eligible patients.  This monitoring gives a better understanding of blood sugar trends throughout the day and night without the need for multiple pokes.

Care Coordination

Our outpatient provider teams will help with coordinating appointments, answering questions, and keeping you and your family informed of planned services and test results.

Level II OB/GYN Ultrasound and Fetal Echocardiogram

Those with diabetes diagnosed prior to pregnancy are at higher risk for delivering a baby with structural anatomic differences. We offer AIUM certified Level II OB/GYN ultrasound including fetal echocardiography here on-site to help guide pregnancy management, and we work collaboratively with our NICU to ensure comprehensive care post-delivery.

Pregnancy Planning

Planned pregnancies are healthy pregnancies. If you have pre-existing diabetes and are considering your reproductive options our team is happy to discuss pregnancy risks and make sure you enter pregnancy as healthy as possible.

Contraceptive Services

Diabetes can limit the options for contraception. Our team works closely with the UR Medicine Complex Contraception Clinic to ensure you have a full range of counseling and options.
