Vestibular Rehabilitation

Make Appointments & Get Care

What is Vestibular Rehabilitation?

Vestibular rehabilitation is a specialized form of physical therapy used to treat inner ear (vestibular) disorders or symptoms, including dizziness, vertigo, and trouble with balance, posture, and vision.

These main symptoms—along with secondary symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, and lack of concentration—can trigger mental and emotional issues such as anxiety and depression.

UR Medicine's Approach

The goal of vestibular rehabilitation is to improve gaze stability, improve balance, reduce vertigo, and enable more participation in daily activities. You'll receive a thorough evaluation, and a personalized treatment plan will be created.

If only diagnostic testing is needed, we are able to provide this service and send the referring physician the results through UR Medicine's electronic records system or by fax, usually within one business day.

We realize many of our patients travel a great distance to see us, and we make an effort to provide all the necessary services at one visit. If desired, patients can usually be seen and evaluated by one of our fellowship-trained neurotologists (ear, nose, and throat doctors who specialize in the ear and skull base) the same-day testing is performed.

What Sets Us Apart?

Our mission is to provide a higher level of service for patients with vestibular disorders in the greater Rochester area who are understandably frustrated. Our outpatient clinic offers state-of-the-art testing services that employ the standard as well as new methods, which we have introduced to the region. We are able to coordinate vestibular testing with other services, such as audiograms, which are available at the same convenient location.

UR Medicine ENT physicians (otolaryngologists) at UR Medicine are trained in surgical and non-surgical treatment of diseases of the ears, nose, throat, head, and neck. Our specialists perform hundreds of procedures and surgeries every year, so patient care is always in the hands of well-practiced experts.

In fact, as part of the University of Rochester Medical Center, our physicians treat more complex conditions and unusual complications than most physicians in the Rochester metropolitan area and surrounding region.

Many of our physicians are also involved in research that focuses on the vestibular system. All of our doctors are board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology.
