Global Health
URMC established a partnership with Lira University in 2023 to collaborate on research and medical education at both Lira University and Lira Regional Referral Hospital.
ID Division chief, Dr. Paul Bohjanen, has over 20 years of experience working in Uganda in both Kampala and Lira. He has established a cryptococcal meningitis diagnosis and treatment program that has impacted the delivery of healthcare to Ugandans living with HIV in Kampala. In 2017, he transitioned the program to northern Uganda in Lira. Fellows will have the opportunity to participate onsite in NIH and pharmaceutical based clinical trials and epidemiological studies. Disease burden consists of HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, Hepatitis B, Typhoid fever, and other tropical diseases.
In collaboration with the UR Vaccine Treatment Evaluation Unit (VTEU) and AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) programs at URMC, fellows can apply for pilot funding and further grant support to pursue a career in global health medicine. Local Ugandan programs including MARA Rural Health Consortium and Strengthening Institutional Capacity for Research Administration (SICRA) were established to improve health through research and provide additional support in Uganda.
