PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Health Emergency Management Seminar - Trauma Management for Rural EMS And Community Hospitals (T-REACH) is designed to better prepare hospital and non-hospital response partners in planning, mitigating, responding to and recovering from natural and man-made disasters that impact the delivery of health care in a community or impact the environment of care for responders. The goal of the 2021 virtual seminar is to enhance knowledge in the management of multi-injured patients and to understand the importance of working as a team of professionals in caring for patients with life-threatening traumatic injuries in the rural EMS setting and community hospitals. Relevant information and stimulated discussions will focus on best practices in the management of trauma/disaster patients.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
Based on presentations, participants will be able to:
- Prepare and respond to mass casualty events in the rural community
- Differentiate severity of injuries across multiple mechanisms
- Discuss management and destination decisions for the multi trauma patient
TARGET AUDIENCE
Healthcare professionals (MD/DO, PA, NP, RN and other allied medical professionals) in rural settings caring for trauma patients (ED, Acute Floor, ICU and EMS) in New York State.

The virtual seminar series will occur over 2 days (April 14 & 15, 2021) and include three 1hr presentations starting at 8:30am and concluding by noon each day. Registrants can register to attend one or both sessions.
Session 1: April 14, 2021 @ 8:30am - 12:00pm
Initial Resuscitation: Too Sick to Stay, Too Sick to Go
Presented by: Michael A. Vella, MD, MBA

Objectives:
- Prepare providers in a rural setting to appropriately care for the injured patient.
- Assess and resuscitate a trauma patient, while simultaneously initiating the transfer process early if it is needed.
- Define relationship between the rural trauma facility and regional trauma system through effective communication.
Head and Neurological Trauma

- Recognize the signs and symptoms of traumatic brain injuries.
- Understand the components of destination decision making for the head injuried patient.
- Understand treatment priorities for the newly head injured patient.
Initial Management of the Burn Patient

- Determine the TBSA of burn wounds using the rule of 9's
- Understand the basic resuscitation of a burn patient

Mass Casualty Event in a Rural Environment

- Plan and execute a response plan focused on patient outcomes.
- Identify the lessons learned from real world multiple casualty incident.
Airway First! Management of Traumatic Airways

- Identify risk factors for a difficult airway.
- Discuss airway and ventilatory management in traumatic airways.
Falls Across the Ages: Injury Patterns and Fall Related Case Reviews

Trauma Outreach and Education Coordinator - Upstate University Hospital
Objectives:
- Identify the types of falls commonly associated with specific age groups to include pediatrics and elderly adults.
- Describe the injuries typically associated with the above fall types.
- Identify fall patients who should be treated at a Trauma Center based upon the CDC's 2011 Guidelines or Field Triage of Injured Patients, New York State Basic Life Support Adult and Pediatric Treatment
Protocols and Collaborative Advanced Life Support Adult and Pediatric Treatment Protocols.
ACCREDITATION/CERTIFICATION
A Certificate of Attendance for each session will be available to all attendees that complete a post-session evaluation.
This activity has been approved by NYS BEMS for EMS CME Core and Non-Core Credits. EMS CME Credits available for each session will be listed on the Certificate of Attendance.
Regional Training Center (RTC) Grant funds are available to cover the cost of CME for appropriate Healthcare Emergency Preparedness Coalition (HEPC) attendees that work in the Western, Central New York, Capital District and Metropolitan Area Regions of NYS (excluding NYC). We ask that you only request CME if your NYS Licensed Profession requires continuing medical education for license/certification renewal. This may include physicians, mid-level providers and nurses.
ACCREDITATION: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, SUNY Upstate Medical Center, Erie County Medical Center, John R.
