Flaum Eye Institute Welcomes Mark Breazzano, M.D.
The Flaum Eye Institute is thrilled to welcome Mark Breazzano, M.D., as an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and a member of its Retina Service. Breazzano will also serve as the Director of the Retinal Fellowship Program, sharing his expertise with the next generation of physicians.
A Syracuse, NY native, Breazzano has a wealth of experience as a high-volume retina surgeon, both in private practice and as full-time faculty at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute. His career is distinguished by a deep commitment to research, clinical trials, and the mentorship of medical students, ophthalmology residents, and retina fellows.
Breazzano’s impressive academic background includes graduating cum laude from Hamilton College and magna cum laude from SUNY Upstate Medical University, where he received several scholarships and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society. He went on to complete an internship at Yale University, followed by an ophthalmology residency at Vanderbilt University, where he won the national First Place Resident Writer’s Award from Ophthalmology Times and Vanderbilt’s inaugural Lefkovitz Discovery Award. He then pursued a retinal surgery fellowship at Columbia University, where he was recognized for the Best Clinical Research Paper.
Breazzano is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Retina Society, the American Society of Retina Specialists, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He serves on the editorial advisory board for Ophthalmology Times and is a peer reviewer for multiple medical journals. His expert opinions are frequently sought by both medical and mainstream press, further establishing his reputation as a leading voice in the field of ophthalmology.
At the Flaum Eye Institute, Breazzano will be treating a wide range of retinal conditions, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinal disease, and retinal vein occlusion. He will also perform various procedures, such as pharmaceutical intraocular injections, macular hole surgery, retinal detachment surgery, and management of inherited retinal disease, among others.
When he is not caring for patients, Breazzano enjoys spending time in the great outdoors, traveling, and being with his family.
