Frequently Asked Questions

What service do you provide during a vision screening?

During our vision screening, we check near, distance, and color vision (for kids).  For adults, we provide near, distance, Amsler Grid testing (tests for changes to the center of your vision due to diseases affecting the center of the retina called the macular, like age-related macular degeneration), retinal photos, and eye pressure.

What service do you provide during a vision and eye exam?

Our vision exams involve a refraction or check for glasses and providing participants with a prescription for glasses and a complete eye exam that can identify diseases in the eye such as cataract, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and help determine the need for glasses in some cases.

*If further care is needed, participants would be referred to an FEI office location.

Do you perform screenings and exams on the van?

At this time, our van is used primarily for transporting equipment to your location.  We would need an indoor space that will allow us to perform these services for your community.

Who performs these services?

We have a wonderful team that consists of Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Medical Students, and Support Staff.  All vision and eye exams will be conducted by an Ophthalmologist or Optometrist.  Vision screenings are done by Medical Students with the supervision of an Ophthalmologist or Optometrist.

How long is a vision screening for an individual?

For kids, it ranges from 5-10 minutes.  For adults, it may be 15-20 minutes.

How long is a vision exam for an individual?

It is dependent on the provider but can range from 20-60 minutes.

For your visit, how many people need to be interested in order for MobilEyes to come to our site to perform a vision or eye exam?

We would need a minimum of 15 for adults and 20 for students.

Schools

Once I submit a request, how long will the process take to plan a school visit?

Once a request has been submitted, there is a contract that needs to be established and approved by your School District and FEI/URMC.

What is the responsibility of the schools wanting to arrange on site exams at the school?

For screenings, we require a reserved space that is at least 20 ft (to test distance vision), a table, power source, we would need a schedule of when each class will be arriving, a student roster, and an Expectation Form signed.

For exams, we would need the Consent and other medical forms distributed to the students who did not pass the vision screening.  FEI is unable to contact families until the Consent Form is signed and returned. We require a room reserved (*info on facilities to move equipment).

It would also be helpful for us to have access to your WiFi and we will take care of everything else!

Families

Is there anything that I need to do to prepare my student for a vision exam?

Please be sure to complete the medical forms to allow FEI to perform the exam. FEI will contact you for insurance information, to remind you of day of school visit, and confirm that you are still interested in getting your child examined.

What happens after the exam?

Your child will return home with an After Visit Summary and a prescription, if glasses are recommended.  A representative from FEI will contact you to share the results of the exam, schedule any follow up appointments, and provide an update on glasses, if necessary.

Once a vision screening has been completed, what are the next steps?

If your students passed the vision screening, they are all set!

If your student did not pass the screening, a representative from the school will contact you and provide you with paperwork to complete in order for us to provide this follow up service.  Here are the forms: Parental Consent Form, RHIO, Notice of Privacy Practices, and Patient Care Agreement.

Can I attend these school visits?

Yes!  Feel free to let us know if you will attend and we can inform the school representative as well.  We would love to have you present!

Is the exam covered by insurance?

Prior to our school visit, you will receive a call from one of our team members to verify insurance information and discuss any potential co-pays.  If your student does not have insurance, please contact Sherianne Buehler, Population Eye Health Coordinator at 585-275-2830.

What if my student needs glasses?

We have an Optician that will be on-site either the same day as our exams or shortly after and can do fittings and help students select frames that will work best!  Through this program, the first pair of glasses is free of charge!

You can also contact your insurance company as some will provide a pair of glasses annually as part of your plan.  It helps to have one pair for school and one for other activities.

What if my student breaks or loses their glasses?

If your student breaks or loses their glasses, please visit a FEI Optical shop.
