Pediatric MobilEyes
We partner with schools in the Greater Rochester Area to provide vision screenings and in-school comprehensive eye exams for students in grades Pre-K to high school. Our goal is to ensure that no child experiences educational setbacks due to vision problems. We recognize that vision problems and eye diseases can impact academic performance and our MobilEyes program helps by creating easy access to vision care.
Our current collaborations include: Uncommon Schools – Rochester Prep, Rochester City School District, and Greece Central School District. We are continuing to grow and expand! If interested in a partnership, please fill out our MobilEyes Inquiry Form!
Since 2022, our MobilEyes program has provided the following services:
- Nearly 3,500 vision screenings
- Resulted in over 900 students being recommended for an eye exam
- 172 on-site eye exams and 117 pairs of glasses (free)
Vision Screenings
New York State mandates vision screenings for students in grades pre-K, K and every odd grade. These include tests for distance, near and color vision. If a student has difficulty in any of these areas, then a comprehensive eye exam will be recommended.
In-School Vision Exams
Our MobilEyes team delivers all the equipment to schools and conducts exams with a Pediatric Ophthalmologists or Optometrist specializing in pediatric eye care. If glasses are recommended, the Optician on our team, Tom Scalzo, orders and fits glasses for students and will deliver them to the students at their school when ready. If more complex care is needed, students can be referred to one of our FEI clinics.
Follow-up Appointments
We would schedule any follow-up appointments at one of our Flaum Eye Institute locations.
Eye Diseases in Children
Common refractive errors are corrected with glasses:
- Myopia (nearsightedness): close objects are clear but distance is blurry
- Hyperopia (farsightedness): distant objects are clearer but may have difficulty for near objects
- Astigmatism: a warped focus that causes blurry vision for near and distant objects
Conditions that require specialized care
- Amblyopia (lazy eye) is caused by poor development of the visual centers of the brain. This results in decreased vision in one eye due to unequal focus, eye misalignment, or eye opacity. It can be corrected by patching or eye drops.
- Strabismus (misaligned eyes) may cause amblyopia, difficulty with depth perception, social difficulties, or reading difficulties. It can be treated with glasses, patching or eye muscle surgery.
