Ocular Oncology
FEI is the region’s only center for the treatment of eye cancers and eye tumors including ocular melanoma, retinoblastoma and choroidal hemangiomas. Ocular cancers are relatively rare but can be life-threatening to all ages. Fortunately, with early detection and advanced treatments, the prognosis for remission is excellent.
Eye cancers and tumors have a variety of causes, including environmental exposure, aging, and chance events, and sometimes can occur in the context of hereditary predisposition. We take a multi-disciplinary approach to addressing malignant cancers of the eye, as well as diagnosing and monitoring benign tumors. Our specialized care includes the most advanced medical and surgical treatments with the goal of eradicating the cancer while preserving as much vision as possible.
When needed, we incorporate genetic testing and counseling which can be used to:
- Predict tumor aggressiveness
- Personalize treatment strategies
- Explore patient and familial predisposition for certain cancers
- Provide screening to those with a higher risk for eye cancers
The program is directed by ocular oncologist Vikas Khetan, MBBS, who may involve specialists from other areas of ophthalmology including retina, cornea, pediatrics, and orbital services, and collaborating specialists from the Wilmot Cancer Institute
